Labiaplasty

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce and reshape the inner vaginal lips (labia minora) for improved comfort, function, and appearance.

Labiaplasty in Memphis

Labiaplasty can address both cosmetic and functional concerns caused by enlarged or asymmetrical labia. Some women experience irritation, discomfort during activities such as cycling or intimacy, or feel self-conscious about appearance in clothing or swimwear. Labiaplasty reshapes and refines the labia minora to create a balanced, natural contour while maintaining normal sensation and function.

What It Can—and Can’t—Do

What It Does:

  • Reduces excess tissue of the labia minora for improved comfort and appearance.
  • Creates better symmetry between the left and right labia.
  • Helps relieve physical discomfort during exercise, intimacy, or daily activities.
  • Improves confidence in form-fitting clothing or swimwear.

What It Doesn’t Do:

  • Alter the labia majora (outer lips) unless combined with other procedures.
  • Guarantee complete elimination of discomfort from unrelated pelvic or vulvar conditions.
  • Serve as a treatment for sexual dysfunction.

Is This Right for You?

You may be a good candidate for labiaplasty if you:

  • Are in overall good health and a non-smoker.
  • Experience discomfort, irritation, or self-consciousness due to enlarged or uneven labia.
  • Have realistic expectations for both the aesthetic and functional results.
  • Are not pregnant or planning pregnancy in the immediate future.

Consultation & Preparing for Surgery

During your consultation, Dr. Wallace will:

  • Review your concerns and desired goals.
  • Take a complete medical history and discuss any past gynecologic or pelvic surgeries.
  • Perform a careful physical examination to assess anatomy and tissue quality.
  • Explain available techniques, anesthesia options, and recovery timelines.

Before surgery, you may be asked to:

  • Avoid medications or supplements that increase bleeding risk (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or certain herbal products).
  • Stop smoking to promote proper healing.
  • Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure.

Surgical Techniques

Labiaplasty techniques are tailored to your anatomy and preferences:

  • Trim Method: Removes excess tissue along the outer edge of the labia for a smoother contour.
  • Wedge Method: Removes a pie-shaped segment of tissue from the thickest area, preserving the natural edge.

Both methods are performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on your needs.

After Surgery: Recovery & Results

  • Patients go home the same day as surgery.
  • Swelling and mild discomfort are common for the first 1–2 weeks; ice packs and prescribed medications help with relief.
  • You should avoid strenuous activity, tampon use, and sexual intercourse for about 4–6 weeks.
  • Final results are typically visible once swelling resolves, revealing a smoother, more proportionate contour.
  • Risks may include bleeding, infection, changes in sensation, or scar tissue formation—though these are uncommon when performed by an experienced surgeon.
